Valves

There are two basic valve designs to control water flow during the normal service and regeneration cycles:

  • Motor driven
  • Solennoid operated

In the motor driven class of valves there are two types:

  • Pistons positioned by cams
  • Flappers positioned by cams

Controls

The valves are in turn controlled by three different types of controls produce regeneration cycles:

  • Timer controls -- based on an estimate of time between regeneration cycles
  • Meter controls -- based on actual water consumption as it flows through a meter device

  • Manual controls -- based on best guess or actual manual measurement of water quality

The timer and meter controls can be manually over-ridden in to produce semi-automatic cycles, i.e., the operator pushes an over-ride button to start the regeneration cycle which then completes automatically.
